Statistical Investigation of Neuropsychiatric Patients in General Hospital Emergency Room

Abstract
The authors investigated the statistical features of psychiatric emergencies in the general hospital, National Medical Center, in Korea.
From Jan. 1. ¢¥79, to Dec. 31, ¢¥79, 7536 patients visited emergency room of National Medical Center.
Among them, we selected 140 patients who were referred to Neuropsychiatric dept., by the duty doctcor for the psychiatric evaluation and management. The followings are the results;
1. The rate of neuropsychiatric patients were 1. 9 percent of the total patients who came to the emergency room.
2. Female patients out-numbered the male patients significantly and the largest fraction of the patients were in their 3rd decade.
3. Only 20.4 percent of the subjects were the adjacent neighbors around this hospital.
4. More than half of the subjects arrived at emergency room between 8: 00 A.M. and b : 00 P. M.
5. Seasonal variation showed highest rate in spring and lowest in autumn. (P<0.05)
6. Most common problems were somatic symptoms.
7. Neurotic disorders were most prevalent among the subjects followed by convulsive disorder, organic brain syndrome.
8. More than half of the patients were recommended to admit and 15 percent of the patients were proved to be not true psychiatric emergencies.
